A whole town haunted by a shape shifting eternal being, which lurks under the city, randomly appears out of nowhere handing out balloons to little kids, telling them jokes and eating them alive. "A magnum opus of terror" is actually a good description to Stephen King's It. But more accurate would be " a heart touching tale that reminds us of our lost childhood". Because it is more than just about the terror. It is about how a bunch of 'losers' come together, bond and team up to defeat something that takes the shape of worst fears of every kid. The book is very creepy. And many readers have found it to be too graphic and disturbing. There were some things that everybody found disturbing and unnecessary. Well Mr King was high on Cocaine while writing this. So, what can you expect. The language used in the book is very solid and apt for anybody trying to improve their English vocabulary. Descriptions of the surroundings and the world they exist are given in so detailed manner that you almost know it as you know your hometown.
Story is told from several perspectives, from different time periods and they are all mixed together in a beautiful and smooth way that it has a cinematic charm to it. There can be many parallels drawn and many symbolic stuff spotted all across the length of the story.
All the characters in the story are fleshed out really well. They feel real and believable, even when they all are in someway damaged or broken inside. All the characters were given good space to be brought to life. No wonder the book is so large! Right!
Well I would say it is worth it. Because it was worth it, for me. But I would suggest that you don't binge read this book. You give time to yourself to appreciate and marvel at the beauty of the book. And even take time to remember your good old days. When you were riding down the streets in your bicycle fierce and carefree, or when you were building stuff pretending to be an architect, or trash mouthing everyone you see , or standing your ground with your buddies when you were going to get one hell of a "whooping", or getting your bones broken every now and then, or just chilling with your lot. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Even stuff that I thought I had forgotten.
So, have a good read and let the memories flow in. Because in the end that's all we have left.
